HTS or PGS: what to choose for casting?

Every foundry sooner or later faces the question of the balance of quality and cost-effectiveness. The traditional sand-clay mixture looks like a proven solution, but with increasing requirements for quality and accuracy, investments in production will also increase significantly. The search for economical alternatives in this case usually leads to the use of cold-hardening mixtures. The competitiveness of the production itself directly depends on the correct balance of cost-effectiveness and product quality. In the case of HTS, in addition to improving competitiveness, production also receives convenient foundry molding technology. This is what will be discussed in the article.

What is PGS and HTS: a basic definition of technologies

Sand-clay mixture (SCM) is a traditional material used in foundry production for molding. The basis of the mixture is quartz sand mixed with clay and water. Such a molding mixture allows you to create durable and relatively cheap molds for castings until the requirements for accuracy and quality increase. Which in the case of SCM requires expensive equipment.

Cold-curing mixture (CCM) is a modern technology where resin and a catalyst are added to the sand mold, which ensures rapid hardening without heat treatment. This process, at significantly lower costs, allows for higher-quality and more accurate molds, and the casting cycle is faster and more controlled. This casting technology, due to its cost-effectiveness and product accuracy, covers most of the needs of foundries.

Where and when is it appropriate to use PGS?

PGS technology without the use of modern automation is suitable for enterprises where cost-effectiveness is required and there are no high requirements for casting accuracy. Traditional PGS-based mold casting is advantageous in serial production with a small budget. Also, such a mold mixture allows the use of local raw materials and simple preparation methods.

An important factor is the possibility of recycling PGS waste, as sintering clay and sand creates environmental restrictions. However, in cases of mass production of simple parts, PGS still remains competitive. For companies that value simplicity and are willing to put up with a certain percentage of defects, PGS remains a reasonable choice.

Key advantages of the CTS process for modern production

The XTS system opens up wide opportunities for mechanization and automated casting with a reasonable balance of investments. Thanks to the use of binders and a controlled hardening process, high casting accuracy and minimal scrap are achieved. The strength of the molds allows you to produce complex geometric parts without deformation.

Another advantage is the possibility of effective sand regeneration, which significantly reduces the cost of casting materials and makes the process more environmentally friendly. For modern production, HTS technology is becoming the standard, as it combines quality, speed and economic effect in the long term.

Comparison table/analysis: PGS vs HTS

To better understand the differences between the two methods, it is worth looking at the key parameters that affect the quality and economics of production. The table below will help you assess the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.

ParameterPGSHTS
Compositionsand-clay mixture (sand + clay + water)cold-curing mixture (sand + resin + catalyst)
Shape accuracyaveragehigh

Comparing the above characteristics, we can conclude that the PGS remains an acceptable solution for simple tasks, but the HTS is more effective for modern production conditions, where accuracy and stability of results are important.

How we help implement HTS

At UKRFAVORIT, we provide consulting for foundries and select optimal solutions for various types of production. We offer comprehensive support – from the selection of the necessary materials to the supply of foundry equipment and personnel training. An important part of our work is process analytics and advice on production modernization.

Customers receive not only materials, but also turnkey solutions to increase efficiency. Thanks to our technical support, you can quickly move from traditional PGS to modern HTS, and most importantly, maintain a balance between quality and costs.

Recommendations for choosing technology for your production

If your company is focused on simple and inexpensive processes, then PGS technology may be optimal. For mass products with low geometry requirements, this solution will be the most economical. However, if high precision and complex castings are required, it is worth considering XTS technology.

Our experience shows that switching to modern casting with HTS allows you to significantly increase productivity and reduce the percentage of scrap. The choice always depends on your strategy: either stay in the field of traditional casting, or take a step towards new standards and invest in the implementation of technologies.

We recommend considering all parameters: casting cycle, raw material costs, casting quality, level of mechanization and future environmental requirements. Our specialists will help you evaluate these factors and choose the right solution for your enterprise.
