Olivine sand is a natural refractory material for foundry production.

The main advantages of olivine sand:

High heat resistance:

• Melting point: about 1780°C.
• Absence of allotropic transformations even at high temperatures.

Resistance to ferrostatic pressure:

• Provides stability for heavy castings.

Chemical inertness:

• It does not interact with manganese, making it ideal for the production of manganese steels.

Efficient heat dissipation:

• The high heat capacity (0.95 kJ/kg°C) contributes to the rapid hardening of the metal, which is important when working with thermal components.

Resistance to slagging:

• It does not react with iron oxides, preserving the integrity of the mold.

The use of olivine sand:

• Production of cast iron castings (gray, high-strength, ductile).
• Production of all types of steels, especially manganese steels.
• Use as a facing compound for injection molds.

Olivine sand is ideal for creating austenitic steel castings due to its unique properties, including resistance to heat-related changes.

Typical characteristics:

Chemical composition (percentage by weight):

• MgO: 45,3%.
• SiO₂: 42,2%.
• Fe₂O₃: 9,0%.
• Al₂O₃: 1,0%.
• CaO: 1,4%.

Physical properties:

• AFS (American Grain Standard): 40-45.
• Specific gravity: 1.7-1.9 g/cm³.
• Hardness on the Mohs scale: 6,5-7,0.
• Sintering starts at about 1450°C.
